A Historic Day for Inclusive Housing: Governor-General Celebrates Milestone with PI Residents
Mon Jul 14 2025
On 29 May 2025, the Project Independence community in Phillip came together to mark a moment that will be remembered for years to come — the official signing of homeownership deeds by residents with intellectual disabilities, witnessed by none other than Her Excellency the Governor-General of Australia, the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC.
This was more than just a ceremonial occasion. It was a celebration of independence, dignity, and the transformative power of inclusive housing.
A National First in Supported Homeownership
Project Independence is proud to be at the forefront of inclusive housing in Australia. Our supported homeownership model — the first of its kind in the country —
empowers people with intellectual disabilities to not only live independently but also to build equity and truly own their own homes.
At our Phillip site, several residents reached a life-changing milestone: signing the deeds to their own homes. This step represents more than property ownership — it symbolises security, pride, and recognition as fully contributing members of the community.

A Governor-General’s Message of Support
Her Excellency the Governor-General joined residents, families, supporters, and staff in celebrating this achievement. In her address, she commended Project Independence’s unique model and the sense of community it creates. She acknowledged the strength and perseverance of residents and the organisation’s commitment to innovation and inclusion in the disability housing sector.
The Governor-General also joined residents for a joyful cupcake decorating activity — a small but meaningful gesture that captured the warmth and connection that define the PI community.

Voices of Independence
For residents like Jackson, signing a homeownership deed marked a powerful new chapter.
"I’m proud to say I own my home now. It’s mine — and I did it with the help of everyone here at Project Independence."
These stories of empowerment and pride highlight what makes PI’s model so special: it’s not just about bricks and mortar, but about building lives of independence, self-worth, and connection.

The Bigger Picture
Australia faces a growing disability housing crisis, and events like this highlight what’s possible when innovative, purpose-built solutions are matched with community support and strong leadership.
Our model works — and we are ready to scale it. Every home built, every deed signed, and every connection made is a step toward a more inclusive, equitable future.

Thank You
We extend our deepest thanks to Her Excellency for her presence, support, and words of encouragement. We also thank our supporters, partners, and residents — this milestone belongs to all of you. Together, we are redefining what independent living can look like for people with intellectual disabilities — and showing the nation what’s possible when inclusion leads.
